Different models of Honeywell DCS and Basic overview

What is DCS?

A Distributed Control System (DCS) is a particularly designed automated control system that consists of control elements that are geographically scattered throughout the plant or control region.

It varies from centralised control systems in that a single controller in a central location handles control, but with DCS each processing element, machine, or set of machines is handled by a dedicated controller. DCS is made up of a large number of local controllers located across the plant control area that are linked by a high-speed communication network.

In this article, we are going to discuss Honeywell’s various DCS models and its features.

Honeywell is an American multinational company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was founded in 1906.

What is Local Control Network (LCN)?

LCN stands for Local Control Network. It was developed by Honeywell.

Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) has introduced the Experion Local Control Network (LCN) solution. This product enables Honeywell’s traditional TotalPlant Solution (TPS) control system to be incrementally upgraded to allow for connection with Experion PKS. With Experion LCN, Honeywell provides a path for continual innovation to customers all over the world. While exploiting existing automation assets, industrial facilities can progressively transition their legacy control system to become part of a new, modern solution.

The concept of Local Control denotes the existence of many logical networks within a single physical network. Geographical area, time, up and downlink capacity, and delay can all be used to build logical networks. You are given established performance templates to utilize from non-public networks as an enterprise. You can distribute resources to your users on the Local Control interface in the same way that receptionists grant access to buildings to guests, their own workers, subcontractors, and so on.

How does it work?

Extending on the capabilities of the Enhanced TPS Node, the Experion LCN enables Honeywell customers to benefit from continual innovation. A new ELCN Bridge connects Experion to Classic Coax LCN using the proven Experion Fault Tolerant Ethernet (FTE) infrastructure.

The LCN coax connection can be disconnected one LCN node at a time once this connection is created. To allow virtualization, only one redundant ELCN Bridge pair is required instead of a hardware connection for each Experion TPS Node.

What problems does ELCN solve?

Honeywell’s gradual upgrade to Experion LCN in process modernises the control system architecture and allows the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT by Honeywell). This technique keeps controls secure and dependable while upgrading and growing with the most advanced technologies. It keeps established, dependable systems running longer, increase uptime, and protects hardware and network infrastructure investments.

What are the functions of LCN?

  • In most cases, the first function mentioned is crisis priority management. This means that in congested networks, you can manually or automatically adjust user priorities to provide access to those who need it. This is crucial in catastrophic events, but it is not the most important aspect in our opinion.
  • Access to services is a key component of local control; not every user/app requires access to the same performance level at the same time. You can make these choices on your own through the Local control system whenever you need to.
  • Another important feature is the ability to view network status in your own location. If there is an issue in your local network, you can view the current status. You may also see where your users are in the network, how much capacity they are consuming, and how much they are entitled to in the local control system. Local control systems can also ensure that the network is not overloaded and that service level agreement (SLAs) are met.
  • Profile modifications can be performed automatically using the API to Local control. On a dynamic basis, changes can be tied to time and location. A geofence, for example, can be created. Depending on how it is used or the surroundings, a single device may employ a different profile. The user does not have to be a human, and IoT applications can also be handled locally.

DeltaV – CHARM Technology

CHARM technology This unprecedented flexibility comes from characterization module (CHARM) technology, which allows field wiring of any signal type to be terminated anywhere. A CHARM is simply a single-channel component with an A/D converter and signal characterizer inserted onto the terminal block where field wires are landed. Each device can be landed anywhere on the strip regardless of its signal type: AI 4-20mA, AO 4-20mA, AI 0-10V, TC, RTD, DI Dry or Namur, DO High Side, Relays Contact Outputs or Isolated DI and DO for higher currents or higher VAC Voltages. Simply click in a CHARM with the corresponding signal type, and the landing is done. After the CHARM is in place, the channel is electronically marshaled to any controller in the system. This means no marshalling cabinet or cross-wiring, fewer wires, much less work, and fewer contact points for potential failures.

Electronic marshalling and the CHARM technology have proven thier flexibility in installations, delivering up to 50% wiring savings over traditional wiring as well as eliminating traditional marshalling cabinets and cross-wiring. At the same time, they increase reliability while reducing maintenance costs, responding quickly and easily to late changes with no impact on startup scheduling.

Intrinsically Safe CHARMs The addition of intrinsically safe (IS) CHARMs provides significant savings with Electronic Marshalling, with the added intrinsically safe circuitry for field wiring into hazardous areas, including Zone 1, Zone 0 or Class 1 Div1. I/O in hazardous areas traditionally requires costly explosion-proof mounting or isolation barriers, along with added space for barrier and termination, and ongoing maintenance to ensure compliance with safety requirements. IS CHARMs deliver a reduced footprint and eliminate the need for separate barriers and the associated inter-cabinet wiring. A smaller footprint and fewer connections improve reliability and deliver significant cost savings.

IS barriers are integrated inside the IS CHARM to provide single channel fault isolation, as well as electrical isolation and energy limiting circuitry that meets IEC Ex ia ratings. First available IS CHARMs signal types are: IS AI 4-20mA HART, IS AO 4-20mA HART, IS DI Namur, and IS DO 24 VDC.

Working of PID control

PID control is closed loop control system used widely in industrial automation. PID stands for Proportional-Integral-Derivative control. PID control is the combination of these three controllers.

Conventional ON/OFF controllers are used only where we needed two-stage control operation, which always produces offset in the output. Oscillating nature of ON/OFF system between On and Off limits its usage and hence, it is replaced by PID controller.

Proportional control:

Proportional control never reaches a steady state condition, so the controller requires a manual reset. A fundamental limitation of proportional control has to do with its response to changes in setpoint and changes in process load.

A “load” in a controlled process is any variable not controlled by the loop controller which nevertheless affects the process variable the controller is trying to regulate. In other words, a “load” is any factor the loop controller must compensate for while maintaining the process variable at setpoint.

Process response for PID is shown in above figure. Every process has a fixed setpoint, every controller tries to maintain the PV ( process variable) at the SP( setpoint). The PID controller takes a control action when the PV reaches the setpoint. The incoming PV will definitely have an impact on the process output. This will affect the PV in the output to produce an offset below or above the setpoint.

Integral / Reset control :

If we wish to restore the process to the setpoint after a disturbance then proportional action alone will be insufficient. Integral control system integrates the errors in the process until the error becomes zero.

Process response and reset action for an integral controller is shown above.

If the integration happens at too fast a rate, the controller’s output will “saturate” either high or low before the process variable can make it back to setpoint.

If we wish to restore the process to the setpoint we must increase the input over and above that required to restore a balance. The additional input must replace the lost process parameter and then revert to a mass balance situation to maintain the PV at the setpoint.

The additional action for the integral signal is reset action, it reset the process to a setpoint, reset action is the integral of an error signal to the integral controller action that it is possible to operate the control loop on integral action alone, without proportional. Typically, though, process controllers implement some form of proportional plus integral (“PI”) control.

Derivative/ Rate control :

The derivative is the rate of change of the variable with respect to the other variable. A controller with derivative action looks at how fast a variable change per unit of time, and take control action proportion to the rate of change variable.

Derivate control doesn’t look into the present PV value to control the output, but track the rate of change of variable and control the output with respect to it. It can be seen that the derivative action gives a large, immediate, control signal, which will limit the deviation. The proportional action is then superimposed upon this step. When the error stops changing derivative action ceases.

The rate response gives an immediate control signal, which will be equal to what the proportional response would be after some time. Derivative units are given in minutes.

If the process variable starts to change at a high rate of speed, the job of the derivative action is to move the final control element in such a direction as to counteract this rapid change, and thereby moderate the speed at which the process variable changes. In simple terms, derivative action works to limit how fast the error can change.

PID Control advantages:

  • Increased productivity
  • Decreased equipment strain.
  • Increased process safety
